The concept of timesharing - using only a portion of a condo instead of buying the whole condo, still remains a legitimate form of vacation alternative.
When you buy a plane ticket, you are timesharing, paying for just the amount of space and time you need.
You don't need or want to buy the whole airplane.
Unfortunately, timeshare sellers who own legitimate timeshares, are notoriously naive and fall victim over and over again for scammers who charge upfront fees to list a timeshare.
It is the scamming of timeshare sellers which is the scam.
If you can buy at timeshare at the bargain resale prices available today, and the maintenance fee annually is less than you could rent the like accommodation for, it still makes very good sense.
Actually even if the maintenance fee is equal to or even a little higher than you THINK you could rent for, it still makes sense because rentals are very iffy - you might get a rental one year and not the next.
The greater certainty that the timeshare owner has, is WORTH a great deal!
And quite often when I hear someone say, "why buy a timeshare, I can rent them cheaper", I think that in their mind they are comparing hotel rooms versus condo suites which unlike hotel rooms have kitchens and sleep more people. Not a fair comparison at all.
